The present perfect tense
Study the examples.
She has been ill for a week. (1)
= She got ill a week ago and she is still ill.
He has drunk a bottle of juice. (2) (The bottle is empty now.)
The children have just returned from nursery. (3)
As you see, we use the present perfect tense to express an uncompleted action continuing up to now (1), a completed action. (2). We add just to affirmative sentences to stress that the action happened a short time ago (3).

Exercise 2. Make questions for the underlined words.
1. Murat has been in hospital for ten days.

Have / Has gone to, have / has been to
Look at the examples.
Mary has gone to the supermarket. (1) (He is still there.)
Tom has been to the supermarket. (2) (He has returned from the supermarket)
As seen above, ‘have / has gone to’ expresses that somebody went to somewhere but didn’t return, that he is still there (1) whereas ‘have / has been to’ states that a person went somewhere and came back (2).

The present perfect tense
Look at the examples.
Adam has worked as a waiter since the beginning of the year. (1)
I haven’t seen him since 1997. (2)
The children have played in the park for one hour. (3)
When we use the present perfect tense with since our for, we stress that we have done the action for a certain period of time. Since refers to the beginning of the action (1,2), for indicates how long the action has continued (3).
Exercise 4. Answer the questions, using since or for together with the words in brackets.

2. How long have your parents worked as teachers ? (1986)
3. How long have the Browns been in Turkey ? (two weeks)

No, never. / No, I have never travelled by plane.
Has Mary ever been in charge of an office before ?
Yes, she has. She worked as a director of a bank for several years.
As seen above, we use ever in questions, and never in negative answers.
