Complex Sentences ( Karmaşık Cümleler )

It + passive + that – Clause
Study the example.

It is said that Turks are very hospitable.
(They say Turks are very hospitable.)

As you see, we can use It + passive + that – clause when we avoid expressing whose opinion we are talking about with some reporting verbs such as say, accept, admit, announce, believe, except, hope, know, prove, think, understand, etc.

Exercise 1. Rewrite the following sentences, using (it + passive + that – clause).

1 They say that most of the problems will have been solved within two years.
Its said that most of the problems will have been solved within two years.
2 People expect that the party in power will solve some social problems.

3 They think that inflation will be got under control in a short time.
4 People know that smoking causes a lot of diseases.
5 They consider that nuclear power stations will create a lot of problems in future.

Look at the examples.

Active : They think (that) he is a good man.
Passive : It is thougt (that) he is a good man (1)
or He is thought to be a good man (2)

As seen above, the subject of the that-clause can be used as the subject of the passive structure as an alternative to it + passive. When the subject of the that clause is used as the subject of the passive structure, to infinitive form of the verb in the that clause is used.(2)

Exercise 2. Rewrite these sentences in the passive as shown above.

1 They say that inflation has started to drop.
